There is never a dull moment in Africa, especially in our beloved Rainbow Nation. Firstly, it was the racism remarks taking over social networks. Then the new ‘jest’ in the African circus is a hoax email purportedly from one Brigadier Malahlela doing rounds on WhatsApp and emails.
Extremely URGENT – from the SA Police
This is a new email, a new danger please read to the end.
URGENT – PLEASE READ –

Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on.. This information arrived this morning, Direct from both Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled ‘Mail Server Report’
If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: ‘It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.’
Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC,
And the person who o sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.
This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon.. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the antivirus software’s are not capable of destroying it .
The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself ‘life owner’..
PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS, And ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY

Email: MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from “us.mc1251.mail.yahoo.com” claiming to be email@example.com.
Well, because of a woman’s intuition and journalistic instinct… and obviously also because of the very last sentence of the email, I decided to call the cellphone number on the email. The line rang until it went to voicemail. Just as I was about to hang up, a female voice said clearly that she was on holiday and cannot enjoy her holiday because she is inundated with calls. She says that if ‘you’ are calling in regards to the email going around, please ignore it. Do not spread it. It is not true.
What if it is the hacker Simon Ashton or another hacker trying to warn the public? Clearly the Brigadier’s email was hacked, otherwise how does a fake email carry the Brigadier’s cellphone number?
Further internet research shows that this email has in actual fact been doing rounds since 2008. It is not a fresh hoax after all. It is not a new danger in any way, it has been a new threat since 2008 although in different variations.
